If you’ve ever wondered where your money goes every month, you’re not alone.
Many people earn a decent income but still struggle to save because their spending lacks a clear plan or vision.

That’s where zero-based budgeting comes in as a great method.

Zero-based budgeting is one of the most effective personal finance strategies because it forces you to assign every coin a specific purpose before the month begins. Instead of wondering where your money went, you decide exactly where it will go. They’re all workers inside your little money-factory. Every expense should be justified.

In this guide, you’ll learn:

What zero-based budgeting is

Why it’s so effective

How to create your own zero-based budget

A practical example

Common mistakes you should avoid

By the end of this article, you’ll know exactly how to use zero-based budgeting to gain control over your finances and yolofy your life!

What Is Zero-Based Budgeting?

Zero-based budgeting is a budgeting method where your every expense should be justified and income minus expenses equals zero.

This does not mean spending all the money that comes in.

Instead, it means every euro receives a job, such as:

Housing

Groceries

Savings

Investing

Insurance

Entertainment

At the end of the budgeting process:

Income – Expenses = €0

I give here the example in the European currency, but it’s the same principle for money in general.

Example:

Monthly income: €3,000

Category

Amount

Housing

€1,100

Groceries

€400

Transport

€250

Investments

€500

Savings

€400

Entertainment

€350

Total = €3,000

Every euro has been intentionally allocated and put to work. Money that goes to saving (emergency fund) and investing can work for your future and compound. If you’re unsure about a framework, you can try the 50-30-20 budgeting framework, which is very simple and straightforward.

Why Zero-Based Budgeting Is So Effective

1. Every Coin Has a Purpose

Without a budget, small expenses can add up very fast. Money is abundant in your brain and easier to access. It’s not wrong to make small expenses, but it shouldn’t be a threat to your financial situation. That’s where an emergency fund can provide you with stability.

Some examples:

Online purchases like the newest toys for your kid, that new video game or shirt from your favourite sports team

Food delivery, you want that lovely stone-baked pizza delivered to your door

Subscriptions like Netflix, HBO for the latest of Game of Thrones

Impulse spending like: I feel good, I’ll buy the newest Tommy Hilfiger while you can wait for promotions later in the year

A zero-based budget eliminates this problem because every euro is assigned before you can spend it.

2. It Prevents Lifestyle Inflation

When income increases, spending usually increases as well.

This phenomenon is known as lifestyle inflation. I’m not a very big fan of this. I’ll give an example of my own situation: I work in the administration and receive a monthly salary. When certain indexes have been reached, 3 months later, I’ll receive an index on my salary. Inflation is something that can be easily manipulated. The fact that I received this 3 months later means I’ve already adapted to the inflated products in the store. I don’t need to spend much more. Of course, you have extreme examples, but that’s the point of it all.

Zero-based budgeting forces you to decide in advance how to use extra income. In my situation above, I’ll put most of it in the category of savings or investing. Of course, never forget to reward yourself for your efforts because it can keep you going on this track.

Example:

Salary increase after years of good work: €400 per month.

You decide to divide it into the following baskets or categories:

€200 towards investments and let money compound

€100 emergency fund for your financial stability

€100 lifestyle spending to reward yourself

Instead of disappearing, the extra money strengthens your finances and your mental and financial stability. Lastly, don’t forget to reward yourself for putting in the monthly volume of work. This is a very important aspect of The Yolofied Monkey and keep rewarding yourself “on the road” because only this way, it will become an automatic drill.

3. It Helps You Save and Invest More

Because saving and investing are planned categories, they become automatic priorities.

Many people discover they can save far more than they expected once they start budgeting intentionally; they can even get addicted to it and go extreme. There’s nothing wrong with saving extremely, living in a very frugal way. Never forget yourself and your loved ones in the process.

A lot of people don’t have enough on the side to cover 1 month of fixed expenses, that’s why saving and an emergency fund are key. After these steps, you can allocate more to investing because you’ll have to avoid the need to sell to cover some expenses, taking losses on your investments in the process.

How to Create a Zero-Based Budget (Step-by-Step)

Step 1: Calculate Your Monthly Income

Start by determining your total after-tax monthly income.

This can include:

Salary

Side hustle income

Freelance income

Passive income

Rental income

Example:

Salary: €3,200
Side income: €300

Total income: €3,500

It can be hard to make this exercise work from the start. Make sure your main sources, the biggest ones, are listed. If you add new sources of income in the future, just decide to allocate them like the example above: the biggest part to investing, lower parts to emergency fund and your lifestyle, so you can reward and yolofy yourself.

Step 2: List Your Fixed Expenses

Fixed expenses are costs that remain relatively stable each month. They’re there every month, mostly, but there are also expenses that are paid one time in a year, don’t forget those as well, divide those by 12 and add them to your fixed expenses.

Examples:

Mortgage or rent

Utilities

Insurance

Transportation

Phone plan

Internet

Example:

Expense

Amount

Mortgage

€1,400

Utilities

€175

Insurance

€75

Transport

€150

Taxes (paid yearly)

€125

Total: €1,925

It doesn’t matter how many categories you have in fixed expenses, some people like to add a lot of subcategories, I don’t. I like to keep things very simple. Think of it as riding a car, you don’t need a lot of info when driving: if there’s an icon and a red lamp, you know you’re in trouble. Don’t overdo or overthink it.

Step 3: Budget Variable Expenses

Variable expenses change each month, depending on certain conditions.

Examples of categories:

Groceries

Restaurants

Entertainment

Shopping

Hobbies

Example in euros:

Groceries: €400
Restaurants: €120
Entertainment: €80
Hobbies: €70

Total amount of variable expenses: €670

Total amount of fixed and variable expenses in our example: €1,925 + €670 = €2,595

Some of us may overthink this and consider saving and investering as a variable or fixed expense, but they belong in separate categories. You can use the 50-30-20 budgeting framework to start.

Step 4: Allocate Money for Financial Goals

Now assign money to your financial priorities. In our example, we’ve made €3,500 per month and have already €2,595 in expenses, meaning we have to allocate €605. Now we need to give each one these euros a certain job.

Here’s a list of possible priorities:

Emergency fund: a buffer of 6 months fixed expenses provides stability

Retirement investing: make sure you can reitre and keep quality of your life

ETF investing: let money work for you in simple trackers, no need to know all of the stocks

Debt repayment: tackle your debts first (don’t include your mortgage in this)

Travel savings: save for a good trip each year

Example:

Investments: €750
Emergency fund: €155

So, our example is complete, and every euro has been assigned to work in its category for you, while other euros are simply gone (expenses). Do you get it now? Just keep track on a high level and make sure you reward yourself on the road, let the savings and investing categories grow and improve your networth and let compounding do the rest, this way you’re set up for a great life. Try and find a great balance between saving and investing.

Step 5: Make the Budget Equal Zero

This step sums it up as when you subtract your expenses, savings and investments (financial priorities), the result should be zero.

Your total spending should equal your monthly income.

If money remains, assign it to:

savings

investing

extra mortgage payments

fun spending

The goal is:

Income – Expenses = 0

Summary Example of a Zero-Based Budget

Monthly income: €3,500

Category

Amount

Mortgage

€1,400

Utilities

€175

Groceries

€400

Insurance

€75

Investments

€750

Emergency fund

€155

Restaurants

€120

Entertainment

€80

Hobbies

€70

Transport

€150

Taxes

€125

Total = €3,500

Best Tools for Zero-Based Budgeting

You can implement this budgeting method using several tools, always use one you like the most. You don’t have to use an Excel because the writer of this blog post likes a simple spreadsheet.

Spreadsheets

A simple Excel or Google Sheets spreadsheet works perfectly.

Advantages:

Free

Fully customizable

Easy to update monthly

Budgeting Apps

Apps designed for zero-based budgeting include:

YNAB

EveryDollar

Goodbudget

These tools automate budgeting and expense tracking. There paid versions as well. You don’t need paid versions to track down your expenses and control your personal finances.

Pen and paper

While some of us are more digital, a household book and a pen can also do the work for you, writing everything down. There are multiple ways to the destination, the important thing is you get there and reach the final destination: yolofying life.

Common Zero-Based Budgeting Mistakes

Unrealistic Budgets

Budgets must reflect real spending patterns.

Review your last 3 months of bank statements to estimate accurate numbers.

Forgetting Irregular Expenses

Some expenses occur only once or twice per year.

Examples:

Car maintenance

Insurance premiums

Holiday gifts

Vacations

The solution is creating sinking funds.

Example:

Car maintenance: €600/year
Monthly budget: €50

Being Too Strict

Budgets should be flexible.

If you overspend in one category, simply reduce spending elsewhere. This is the only way to make it last, reward yourself and leave room for flexibility. You can add a certain amount each month, that’s all fine, just keep going with it and don’t overthink it.

Zero-Based Budgeting vs Traditional Budgeting

Traditional budgeting often looks like this:

Spend money during the month

Check expenses afterwards

Hope the total isn’t too high

Zero-based budgeting reverses this process.

Plan spending before the month starts

Assign every euro a purpose

Track spending intentionally

This proactive approach is why many financial experts recommend zero-based budgeting.

Final Thoughts

Zero-based budgeting is one of the most effective ways to gain control over your finances.

By assigning every euro a job, you can:

eliminate unnecessary spending

increase savings

invest more consistently

achieve long-term financial goals

The formula is simple:

Income – Expenses = Zero

But the results can be transformative.

If you want to improve your financial situation, try using zero-based budgeting for the next three months and see how much clarity it brings to your money.

F.A.Q.

What is zero-based budgeting?

Zero-based budgeting is a budgeting method where every euro of income is assigned a specific purpose until the remaining balance equals zero.

Is zero-based budgeting good for beginners?

Yes. Zero-based budgeting is one of the most effective budgeting systems for beginners because it clearly shows where every euro goes.

What is an example of zero-based budgeting?

If you earn €3,500 per month, you allocate that money across categories like housing, food, investing, and entertainment until the total equals €3,500.

What is the difference between zero-based budgeting and traditional budgeting?

Traditional budgeting reviews spending after it happens, while zero-based budgeting plans every expense before the month begins.

What is a budget? If you ask people why they feel stressed about money, the answers are often surprisingly similar.

“I don’t know where to begin.”
“I’m not sure where my money goes.”
“I earn enough, but I’m always broke.”
“I want to save, but something always comes up.”

The problem usually isn’t just about how much you make each month (income).

It’s a lack of clarity.

And that’s exactly where a budget comes in.

What is a budget?

A budget is one of the simplest tools in personal finance, yet it has the power to completely change how you handle money. It’s so much easier to know everything is going according to your plan, which is in line with your values.

Let’s break down what a budget really is—and why it can transform your (financial) life. It’s the start of yolofying your life in a good way.

What Is a Budget?

A budget is simply a plan for your money.

It tells your money where to go before you spend it.

Instead of wondering at the end of the month where your salary disappeared, a budget makes sure every euro has a purpose. You should treat all your “warriors”, it doesn’t matter if you’re saving euros, dollars, pounds or any other currency. Each one should work for you and carry out the job you’ve assigned.

A basic budget answers three main questions:

How much money comes in?

Where does it need to go?

How much should be saved or invested?

That’s it.

Despite its intimidating reputation, budgeting is not about complicated spreadsheets or tracking every coffee you buy.

It’s about intentional spending. You don’t have to stress about everything. You do it with a plan. It doesn’t mean to deprive you and your loved ones of enjoying life.

Why Most People Avoid Budgeting

Even though budgeting is powerful, a lot of people seem to avoid it or don’t seem to make this a priority.

There are a few common reasons.

1. It Feels Restrictive

People think a budget means saying “no” to everything.

In reality, a budget simply helps you with prioritizing everything. You’ll spend money on the things that actually matter to you.

2. It Seems Complicated

In a way, it seems complicated, but it isn’t; some budgeting systems are overly complex. Just know that a good budget can be created in less than 30 minutes. When things seem complicated, I always refer to the Pareto principle of 80/20: you can make 80% of the money (budget) by doing 20% of the effort. Should you get the last 20% and use 80% of your energy or time when it’s not needed to reach your destination?

3. It Forces You to Face Reality

Yes, making a budget does require overcoming a certain barrier; the first time is hard, but it will be worth it in the end. Reviewing your spending habits can be painful or just provide plain insight in your way of handling things. It can be uncomfortable, make sure to plan a certain review moment on a regular basis, with yourself or your life partner(s).

If you don’t open your letters and messages, be it online or physical, you won’t pay any invoices or be aware of the changes around you. Avoiding the numbers doesn’t make them disappear. The same goes for a budget. A good budget is your bible and a good way forward.

Why Budgeting Changes Your Financial Life

Once people start budgeting, they often say the same thing:

“I wish I’d started years ago.” When you feel this, you’ll know that you’re on the right track.

Here’s why:

1. You Finally Know Where Your Money Goes

Most people underestimate their spending; we’re programmed or drilled to consume. Each time you buy things, you’re rewarded in your brain, we tend to forget this feeling pretty fast, and the amount of our spending as well.

Subscriptions, impulse purchases, and small daily expenses quietly drain money and should be reviewed.

A budget shines a good light on this and increases your sense of awareness.

Awareness is the first step toward control; this applies to almost everything in your life.

2. You Stop Living Paycheck to Paycheck

Without a budget, money disappears randomly. Living paycheck to paycheck means that you’ll need to work monthly just to survive. For a lot of people, the month is already “over” at the beginning of week 4, which is painful. It means you’ll need to make debts or use your savings to get by.

With a budget, you decide in advance how much goes to:

Bills

Daily spending

Saving

Investing

This makes it much easier to break the paycheck-to-paycheck cycle.

3. You Can Actually Reach Financial Goals

We will talk about setting financial goals later; these goals are different and personal. Some examples:

Do you want to build an emergency fund?

Are you doubting to invest more, but you don’t know how much?

Do you want to pay off your house early?

None of that just happens by accident. It’s a consequence of your personal plan, budget, and roadmap to reaching your goals.

A budget creates the space in your finances to make those goals simple, real, and reachable.

4. Your Financial Stress Decreases

Stress is good to a certain level, but not when it comes to money. Money stress often comes from uncertainty and transparency. People are restless, and don’t sleep well if their finances aren’t great.

This will change if you know that:

your bills are covered

your savings are growing

your spending is under control

You gain something incredibly valuable: peace of mind. By doing this, you’ll free up “mind space” to think about other positive things that can happen in your life. Living and enjoying your life is very important, for yourself and your inner circle.

What a Simple Budget Looks Like

A basic budget only needs about five categories.

Income

This is your total monthly income after taxes.

Fixed Expenses

Fixed expenses are expenses that stay roughly the same each month. They recur monthly.

Examples:

Rent or mortgage

Insurance

Utilities

Internet

Loan payments

Variable Expenses

Variable expenses are expenses that can change from month to month.

Examples:

Groceries

Restaurants

Entertainment

Shopping

Transport

Savings

A lot of financial gurus will say that savings and investing should come together, I don’t agree with that. The first thing you should do is save money on a regular basis and dig yourself a good financial moat. This is called the emergency fund. If you have a lot of debts, you should tackle them first. Don’t invest money you need, but money you don’t need. You need stability.

Examples:

Emergency fund

Paying off extra debt

Saving 1% of the house value each year

The line between investing and savings can be very thin; try to let this money also work for you in a savings account. Look for those accounts that still reward you over time; all the money you don’t have to work for is a win for our money machine.

Investing

Investing is the last step. For a lot of people, this step is one they don’t (dare to) take. We all work a lot of hours each day, week, and month to make some money. Some don’t realise how much money can be made when you invest on a regular basis and let that money work for you through compound interest. We’ll cover that topic later.

A Simple Budget Example

Imagine that one of our fellow monkeys is earning €3,000 per month. Again, I use euros because I live in Europe; use your own currency.

His budget might look like this:

Fixed expenses: €1,500
Variable spending: €900
Savings: €250
Investing: €350

That means about 20% of their income is given to the job to work for their future.

This is a baby step that’s needed to grow wealth over time.

How to Start Your First Budget

You can create a basic budget in just a few steps.

Step 1: Calculate Your Monthly Income

Look at the money that actually hits your bank account each month. If you work for a boss, this will be easy. Try to see what you’ve received in a year and divide it by 12, this normally should grow as life will become more expensive. The same goes for people who work on their own; not every month will be the same.

Step 2: List Your Fixed Expenses

Try to review the last year of fixed expenses.

This gives you your baseline cost of living.

Step 3: Estimate Variable Spending

Try to review the last year of variable expenses.

This will give you a realistic idea of your spending.

Step 4: Decide How Much to Save

Even starting with 10–20% of your income can make a huge difference over time.

Step 5: Adjust as You Go

Your first budget will not be perfect.

That’s normal.

A budget is a living plan, not a rigid rule. In life, things don’t go as planned. Allow yourself to adjust your financial plan; don’t let it work against you in another way.

Final Thoughts

A budget won’t magically make you rich.

But it does something just as important.

It gives you control over your money.

Instead of wondering where your salary went, you decide where it goes. You’re in control and guiding yourself to a great financial future.

Achieving financial freedom is a goal that many aspire to, marking the point at which earning money transitions from necessity to choice. It means having enough resources to support a comfortable lifestyle without the obligation to work. Financial freedom opens the door to greater choices in life, allowing individuals to pursue hobbies, travel, or engage in philanthropic activities without the constraints of financial stress.

To reach this stage, you must understand what financial freedom means, which includes identifying your personal financial goals. These goals can range from short-term objectives like setting up an emergency fund to long-term aspirations such as retirement planning. Comprehensive budgeting plays a crucial role in this process, helping to keep spending in check while allocating funds towards saving and investment avenues.

Financial independence, or FIRE, can be related to the mission of The Yolofied Monkey, as we want to improve our finances to improve different areas of our lives and leave the golden cage.

Key Takeaways

– Financial freedom allows individuals to live comfortably without a mandatory need to work.
– Personal financial goals and effective budgeting are foundational steps toward achieving financial independence.
– Continuous monitoring and adjustment of one’s financial plan is essential for long-term success.
– Financial freedom is close to the mission statement of The Yolofied Monkey, where we aim to live a richer life.

Understanding Financial Freedom

Financial freedom is achieved when you have enough income to cover your living expenses without being dependent on a traditional job or income stream. It involves careful financial planning, investment, and management of your resources, this can be very overwhelming, but we got you covered.

The Concept of Financial Independence

Financial independence signifies the point you have accumulated sufficient personal wealth to live without needing to work actively to cover your necessities. They can maintain their standard of living without a steady paycheck from employment because their assets generate income that exceeds their expenses.

Assets: Investments, savings, real estate

Expenses: Monthly bills, groceries, insurance, taxes

In order to achieve financial freedom, you should:

Assess Finances: Understand current financial status.

Set Goals: Determine the amount of money needed to be financially independent.

Create a Plan: Develop a strategy to reach those financial goals.

Save and Invest: Allocate resources to savings and investment vehicles.

Monitor Progress: Regularly review and adjust the financial plan as necessary.

Know that a plan made at some point in your life doesn’t mean you have to stick with it. You can make a financial plan when you’re alone and stick to it. If you meet someone and you build a family and have a child wish, please adapt your financial plan and put this on the agenda. Kids cost money but a good financial plan allows you to reach financial freedom.

The Importance of Passive Income

The concept of passive income is essential for financial freedom because it provides a source of income that does not require active work. The stability and growth potential of passive income streams enable individuals to cover their living expenses and some even save and invest the rest of it.

Key Characteristics of Passive Income:

Recurring: Regular income on a weekly, monthly, or yearly basis

Low Maintenance: Requires minimal effort to maintain once established

Diversification: Spreading income sources to reduce risk

Examples of Passive Income:

Rental Properties: Income from leasing out real estate

Dividends: Earnings distributed to shareholders from profits

Interest: Income from savings accounts or lending

Royalties: Payments for the use of one’s work, such as books or patents

Sustainable passive income can lead to financial independence, as individuals are not solely reliant on employment income to meet their financial needs. They must focus on identifying opportunities, making informed choices, and managing their income streams effectively.

Make sure you have adequate reserves and have some extra income streams besides your traditional job can improve your finances exponentially.

Setting Financial Goals

Achieving financial freedom requires establishing clear financial objectives. They set measurable targets and define the path to financial independence.

Short-Term Financial Goals

Short-term financial goals provide a foundation for financial well-being. They typically span a period of up to three years. Examples include:

Emergency Fund: Establishing an emergency fund of three to six months’ living expenses.

Debt Reduction: Paying off high-interest debt, such as credit card balances.

Example Table: Short-Term Goals

Goal

Time Frame

Details

Emergency Fund

1-2 years

Save $10,000 for unexpected expenses.

Debt Reduction

1-3 years

Pay off $5,000 in credit card debt.

This is important to note. This is a step that’s crucial when it comes to reaching financial independence. You’ll need to have a buffer, where you can easily cover your “unforeseen” costs. We say unforeseen because of course, with making this cushion, you arm yourself against these financial independence threats. Here we give the example of 3 years, but this could of course be different from situation to situation.

Long-Term Financial Goals

Long-term financial goals focus on future financial security and may extend beyond five years. These goals include:

Retirement Savings: Contributing to a retirement account, like a 401(k) or an IRA, to ensure a comfortable retirement.

Home Ownership: Saving for a down payment on a house.

Stock portfolio of $100,000: Saving for a stock market portfolio worth of $100,000.

Example List: Long-Term Goals

Retirement Savings: Invest 15% of income annually into a retirement fund.

Home Ownership: Save $20,000 for a down payment within five years.

Stock Portfolio: Save 20% of income annually for your stock portfolio.

This can be overwhelming, so you might need a way or framework which you can rely upon to structure your efforts in reaching your financial goals.
A very popular framework is that of the 50/30/20: 50% for Needs, 30% for Wants and 20% for Saving and Investing. You can easily alter those % to fit your needs.

I’ve started with this framework, but recently invested, so I’m closer to 60% of Needs, 10% of Wants, and 30% of Saving/Investing. So happy with these results now as I’m getting closer to reaching financial independence thanks to this easy method.

Creating a Budget

Before you even can achieve financial freedom, you must first establish a precise framework for your income and expenditures. Creating a budget is a critical step in this framework, involving detailed tracking of expenses and identification of areas to curtail unnecessary spending. As said above, the 50-30-20 is an ideal starter framework.

Tracking Expenses

To manage your finances effectively, you should start by documenting all your expenditures. You can use a table like the one below to categorize and monitor your spending:

Date

Category

Description

Amount

2023-12-15

Groceries

Supermarket visit

$50.00

2023-12-16

Utilities

Electricity bill

$65.00

2023-12-16

Transportation

Bus pass

$30.00

Simply use a simple spreadsheet in Excel to get track of your expenses. We don’t mean you should get frugal or something like that but in order to assess a situation, you should collect the right information.

Regularly updating this sheet will provide a clear view of where money is going, making it easier to spot trends and reduce unnecessary spending.

Reducing Unnecessary Spending

Once you have a good idea of where your money is going, you should review their expenses to highlight areas where you can cut back. This may involve opting for more cost-effective alternatives or eliminating certain expenditures. Here is a list of potential strategies to reduce spending:

Subscriptions: Cancel unused or non-essential memberships and subscriptions.

Dining Out: Limit restaurant visits and opt for home-cooked meals.

Energy Costs: Implement energy-saving measures to lower utility bills.

Impulse Buys: Avoid spur-of-the-moment purchases by adhering to a shopping list.

By scrutinizing and reducing your unnecessary outgoings, you can lay a solid foundation for your financial well-being and thus be a step closer to financial freedom.

Building an Emergency Fund

An emergency fund is a financial buffer that can help individuals handle unexpected expenses without the stress of finding funds at the last minute. Establishing an emergency fund is a crucial first step in achieving financial stability and resilience as we’ve said this already many times.

Initial Steps:

Assessment: Start by analyzing monthly expenses and identifying the essentials.

Goal Setting: A standard goal is to save three to six months’ worth of living expenses.

Account Selection: Choose a savings account with high liquidity and return.

Strategies to Build the Fund:

Automatic Savings: Set up an automatic transfer to the emergency fund with each paycheck.

Cutting Expenses: Review and reduce discretionary spending.

Incremental Increases: Gradually increase the amount saved as income grows or expenses decrease.

Maintaining the Fund:

Replenishment: Replenish the fund after any withdrawals.

Review: Regularly review and adjust the target amount based on changes in lifestyle or financial circumstances.

Avoid Temptation: Resist using these funds for non-emergency purposes.

Simply use the same spreadsheet as we’ve said with the 50-30-20 framework and add the categories of Needs, Wants, and Saving/Investing. No need to have 2 or more spreadsheets. Just be disciplined: when you use the fund, make sure you refund accordingly.

A well-funded emergency account offers peace of mind and acts as a first line of defense against financial disruptions. It’s a silent guardian that ensures your financial plan and goals aren’t affected by the unpredictable events in your life.

Paying Off Debt

Achieving financial freedom often necessitates the elimination of personal debt. This section will detail effective methods and tactics for paying off various types of debt.

Strategies for Debt Repayment

Debt Snowball Method: Start with paying off the smallest debts first while maintaining minimum payments on others. Once a debt is cleared, apply its payment to the next smallest balance.
Steps:
1 List debts from smallest to largest.
2 Pay as much as possible on the smallest debt.
3 Make minimum payments on all other debts.
4 Repeat until all debts are paid.

Debt Avalanche Method: Prioritize debts with the highest interest rates to minimize the total interest paid over time.
Steps:
1 List debts from highest to lowest interest rate
2 Allocate extra payments to the debt with the highest rate
3 Pay the minimum on lower-interest debts
4 Continue until all debts are cleared.

Consolidation: Take out a loan to pay off multiple debts, resulting in a single payment at a potentially lower interest rate.

Negotiation: Reach out to creditors to negotiate lower interest rates or more favorable terms.

The important thing is that you start to tackle your debts, as some debts can be a serious threat and hold you back from your desired financial independence. The worst thing is, a lot of people don’t seem to realise this until they’ve accumulated too many debts.

Managing Credit Card Debt

There are a lot of credit cards available, all with other perks, but the downside is that some will cost you a lot of money. Here’s how you can manage this effectively:

Balance Transfers: Transfer your debt to a credit card with a lower interest rate, often on a promotional basis.

Payment Plans: Work with credit card issuers on a structured repayment plan with potentially lower interest rates. Try to automate this, so you’re paying everything in time and you shouldn’t worry anymore about it.

Assess spending habits and trim expenses: channel freed-up funds toward credit card debt repayment.

Avoid accruing more debt by using debit cards or cash until credit card balances are well managed.

Investing Wisely

Investing wisely is essential for achieving financial freedom. It involves selecting the right investment vehicles and managing risks appropriately. But this is easier said than done as investing is an area with a lot of pitfalls and new trends. We say stick to what you know and you’ll be fine.

Understanding Investment Vehicles

Investment vehicles are various assets that individuals can use to grow their wealth over time. They can include stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and real estate…
Each vehicle comes with its own set of features, risks, and potential returns.

Stocks: Shares of ownership in a company. They have high potential returns but also come with higher risks.

Bonds: Debt securities issued by corporations or governments. They offer lower risk and fixed interest payments.

Mutual Funds: Pooled funds from multiple investors used to buy diversified portfolios. The risk and return vary based on the underlying assets.

Real Estate: Investing in property can provide rental income and potential appreciation in value.

When choosing investment vehicles, individuals must consider their financial goals, investment horizon, and risk tolerance.

Here, we won’t talk a lot about cryptocurrencies, forex trading, and other alternatives. Why? Because we want to build a very solid foundation as those investing methods are riskier.

Risk Management in Investing

Risk management is critical to the investment process. It ensures that investors do not expose themselves to undue risk and that their investment decisions align with their financial objectives.

Diversification is a key strategy for managing investment risk. By spreading investments across different asset classes and sectors, investors can reduce the impact of poor performance in any single investment.

Asset Allocation: Deciding how to distribute investments among various assets. Asset Class Percentage (%) Stocks 60 Bonds 30 Real Estate 10

Regular Review: Monitoring and adjusting the investment portfolio over time to ensure it remains in line with your goals and market conditions.

Understanding the level of risk associated with each investment and how it pertains to your financial plan is important. You must also be aware of market trends and have clear strategies for dealing with market volatility.

Simply, invest with money you don’t need, and make sure you have a good buffer. This way, you’ll avoid exit costs that can undo your realized profits.

Developing Multiple Income Streams

In order to achieve financial stability, you should diversify your sources of income. Why? It’s quite obvious because when you’re adding extra income streams, you’ll reduce your risk profile and speed up your journey towards financial independence or leaving the golden cage. This Yolofied Monkey will be glad to take one year off in order to travel, while the extra income streams cover all of my essential expenses, without touching my reserves.

Primary Income: This is typically your main job or business. It is the most reliable source of income and often benefits from focused energy and consistent improvement.
This Monkey has still his primary job as the income is too good to let it go.

Secondary Income: These can range from part-time jobs, freelance work, or any other income-generating projects undertaken alongside the primary one. You can be a volunteer, have a blog with advertising income, maintain a youtube channel, your own webshop, and so on…

Investment Income: Earnings from stocks, bonds, mutual funds, or real estate investments fall under this category. They can provide a passive income stream, although they may carry certain risks and require upfront capital, in some cases a lot of capital.

Types of Income

Examples

Active Income

Salaries, Wages, Commissions

Passive Income

Dividends, Interest, Rental Income

Portfolio Income

Capital Gains from Investments

Types of income + examples

Smart financial planning involves balancing these income types. It is wise to reinvest some profits from active income into passive and portfolio income streams to grow wealth over time. You can use the 50-30-20 framework to start with this.

You must keep educating yourself about different income opportunities and assess your own risk tolerance. Continuous skill enhancement is beneficial for expanding one’s capability to earn through diverse income streams.

Tax Planning and Efficiency

Tax planning is a critical process for individuals and businesses aiming to minimize their tax liabilities while ensuring compliance with the law. It involves analyzing your financial situation from a tax perspective to plan transactions and leverage tax-efficient strategies.

Taxes are a very important factor when it comes to reaching financial independence. This Yolofied Monkey lives in a country where taxes are fairly high and thinks about organizing his extra income streams in a legal entity to reduce his taxes.

Strategic Deductions and Credits: Taxpayers should identify potential deductions and credits, as they can significantly reduce taxable income. Common deductions include:

Mortgage interest

Charitable donations

Retirement Savings: Contributing to retirement accounts, such as a 401(k) or an IRA, can provide tax benefits. Contributions may reduce taxable income and grow tax-deferred. In other countries there might be similar ways resulting in tax deductions.

Account Type

Contribution Limit

Tax Benefit

401(k)

$19,500

Pre-tax

IRA

$6,000

Possibly tax-deductible

Examples of retirement savings and their tax benefit

Investment Choices: The selection of investment vehicles can influence tax efficiency.

Long-term capital gains are often taxed at lower rates compared to short-term gains.

Dividend-producing stocks or mutual funds can provide qualified dividends that are eligible for lower tax rates.

Tax Loss Harvesting: This involves selling securities at a loss to offset capital gains taxes. Investors should be aware of the ‘wash sale’ rule to avoid disallowing a security repurchase within 30 days.

Timing of Income and Expenses: Timing can impact taxation. Individuals may defer income to the next year or accelerate deductions to the current year to optimize their tax situation.

Taxpayers should consult with a tax professional to personalize strategies, stay abreast of changes in tax laws, and align their financial decisions with current tax regulations. This is something I advise strongly, just like building out your business: you can’t do everything perfectly on your own, but this thought process will help you in scaling your business effectively. If I did everything myself, I would be completely drained of energy, that’s not like a Yolofied Monkey should be right ;)!

Retirement Planning

Retirement planning is crucial for financial security. It ensures that you have enough funds to maintain your lifestyle after you retire.

It makes sense that when the government allows you to retire at the age of 67, you’ll have more financial security for the rest of your life because you’ll be receiving money from the government. If you plan to leave at the of 50 instead, you should build your reserves to a certain level.

Retirement Accounts

Types of Retirement Accounts:

Traditional IRA: Contributions are tax-deductible, and taxes are paid on withdrawals in retirement.

Roth IRA: Contributions are made with after-tax dollars, and withdrawals are tax-free in retirement.

Try to maximize these before you put your money elsewhere, it’s easy money when your employer matches what you invest. If you’ve maxed out what you want, you can invest the rest of the money into real estate, stocks, and so on.

Investment Strategies for Retirement

Asset Allocation:

Stocks: Higher potential returns, higher risk, suitable for long-term growth.

Bonds: Lower potential returns, lower risk, provide steady income.

Diversification:

Aim for a mix of asset classes to reduce risk.

Consider target-date funds or managed portfolios for automatic diversification.

Risk Management:

Assess risk tolerance periodically; it typically decreases as retirement nears.

Rebalance portfolio annually to maintain desired asset allocation.

You can also try and talk to experts about this, but you also need to be aware that they’ll ask for % of the invested funds, reducing your returns by a large % over time.

Estate Planning

Estate planning is the process by which individuals prearrange the management and disposal of their estate during their life and after death. It involves organizing one’s assets and ensuring they are transferred to beneficiaries according to one’s wishes, minimizing taxes, legal fees, and court costs.

Key Components of Estate Planning:

Will: A legal document detailing the distribution of assets after death.

Trusts: Entities that can manage assets for beneficiaries.

Power of Attorney: Authorizes someone to act on another’s behalf for legal and financial matters.

Healthcare Directive: Guides decisions related to medical care when one is unable to communicate.

Document

Purpose

Will

Dictates asset distribution and care for dependents.

Trust

Provides asset protection and management.

Power of Attorney

Grants authority to a proxy for decisions.

Healthcare Directive

Outlines preferred medical treatments and procedures.

Essential documents

A comprehensive estate plan is designed to tackle various issues a person’s estate might encounter:

Asset Distribution: It ensures assets are distributed as intended.

Guardianship: If applicable, it designates guardians for any minor children.

Tax Efficiency: It aims to minimize taxes and maximize the estate’s value.

Estate planning should be undertaken with professional guidance to navigate complex laws and tax regulations. Individuals are encouraged to periodically review and update their estate plans, especially after major life events such as marriage, divorce, the birth of a child, or the acquisition of significant assets.

Continuous Learning and Improvement

This section will outline the significance of enhancing financial knowledge and flexibility in adjusting to economic shifts. It’s also very important that you like learning to make this easier.

Financial Education

Key to financial autonomy is a solid foundation in financial education. One must understand various financial instruments, such as stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and retirement plans. A well-informed individual is equipped to make better investment decisions. For instance, knowing the differences between a Roth IRA and a Traditional IRA could influence retirement planning.

Financial Concept

Importance

Budgeting

Forms the baseline of personal financial management.

Investing

Fuels long-term wealth growth through compounding.

Risk Management

Ensures protection against financial downturns.

Tax Strategies

Maximizes income by minimizing tax liabilities.

Some financial concepts and their importance

Adapting to Economic Changes

In a dynamic economic landscape, adaptability is crucial for preserving and growing your wealth. You should stay informed about global economic trends, like inflation rates or changes in interest rates because these can directly impact investments and savings. For example, an increase in interest rates may make fixed-income investments like bonds more attractive.

Challenges:

Competition: With low barriers to entry, many markets are highly competitive.

Trust: Establishing trust without face-to-face interactions can be difficult.

Regulatory Compliance: Navigating various international regulations can be complex.

Trends:

Mobile Commerce: Shopping on smartphones is increasing.

Personalization: Companies use data to tailor user experiences.

Sustainability: Consumers are showing a preference for sustainable and ethical online practices.

Understanding these elements is crucial for anyone looking to navigate and profit from the opportunities in the online economy.

When it comes to the Yolofied Monkey, we can see that mobile-users are increasing and should adapt our site to this. Use your common sense and grow things further from your skills set, don’t try to do everything yourself.

Establishing Your Skill Set

Before you venture in the online job market, you’ll have to recognize your valuable skills and try to improve your digital skills to start with.

Before venturing into the online job market, it is crucial for an individual to recognize their valuable skills and enhance their digital competence.

Identifying Marketable Skills

One must conduct a self-assessment to identify skills that are in demand. They can list their abilities and pair them with needs in the market.

Creative skills: writing, video editing, or social media management.

Administrative skills: bookkeeping, virtual assistance, or project management.

After pinpointing their skills, an individual should analyze job postings and freelance platforms to validate the demand for these skills.

It’s needless to say that this requires a lot of trial and error, but eventually you’ll be able to leverage those skills.

For instance, one skill this Yolofied Monkey has leveraged over the years is the use and training of people of the powerful program Power Bi, there’s an increasingly high demand for this program online.

Improving Digital Literacy

Cybersecurity Awareness: Understanding the principles of secure online practices to protect personal and client data.

Investment in courses or certifications can further validate their expertise and build confidence in their digital skills.

To repeat my example: a Power Bi certification from Microsoft shows others that you’re not a fraud but a credible person. Don’t try to sell skills you’re not very good at as time will tell definitely.

Freelancing Platforms

Freelancing platforms offer individuals a space to sell their skills and services online. They provide a global marketplace where freelancers can connect with potential clients.

Create an Account: Most platforms require freelancers to create an account, providing personal details and payment information.

Select a Niche: It is crucial for freelancers to select a niche corresponding to their expertise and the services they plan to offer.

Here, a good example could be: the skills of making a nice dashboard in Power Bi.

This will work as an avalanche, the more you’re known, the more people will recommend you to others, allowing you to grow further.

Pitching Services to Clients

After setting up a strong profile, freelancers need to effectively pitch their services to stand out among competitors.

It is essential to consistently produce high-quality content and engage with readers to build a loyal following.

We won’t dive in all the monetization strategies as there are plenty more of them, but an interest in the subject or niche, both from you and the readers is key for its success.

Producing Videos for YouTube

Selling digital products is a lucrative way and good example of how to earn money online, as it offers low overhead costs and the ability to scale quickly. Creators can capitalize on their skills by writing eBooks, designing digital courses, or creating and selling graphics.

Writing eBooks

Individuals with expertise in a particular subject can write eBooks and sell them on platforms like Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing or Apple Books.
You could write a book about Power Bi, but the downside is that this program has a lot of updates, so you’ll need to update your book pretty often. Going for a more evergreen niche could be a good idea.

Designing Digital Courses

Digital courses provide a platform for experts to teach and share knowledge in a structured setting. With websites such as Udemy, Coursera, or Teachable, one can create video tutorials, PDF handouts, and interactive quizzes.

If you’ve made a name for yourself, you could go for a digital course, where people can pay for certain period to get access to your courses. By doing this you can leverage the number of clients and get much more revenue, this also means that you should invest in some specialized equipment to ensure quality throughout the course.

Creating and Selling Graphics

Graphic designers have various online marketplaces, like Etsy or Creative Market, to sell their artwork. This can include logos, website themes, or printable art.

In almost every niche or industry, newcomers are often with a steep learning curve and need to adapt fast. While enthusiasm and a spirit of exploration can lead to remarkable blog launches, common pitfalls can negatively affect the growth and success of your blog. Mistakes amateur bloggers make are clarity of their niche, appeal of their content, and nuances of blog design. Each of these factors plays a significant role in carving out a dedicated readership and standing out in the competitive blogosphere.

Developing a successful blog isn’t solely about creating engaging content; it’s also about understanding the mechanics behind it. Novices might not fully grasp the importance of search engine optimization (SEO) or the intricacies of online promotion and marketing. This lack of SEO knowledge can render the most compelling content practically invisible to potential readers. Moreover, engaging with the audience and employing effective monetization strategies are vital elements that frequently are overlooked by those new to blogging. Without these, bloggers may fail to build a loyal community or profit from their efforts.

Technical skills and networking are equally paramount in the blogging journey. Understanding the technicalities ensures that a blog runs smoothly, and forging connections with other bloggers can lead to valuable collaborations and enhanced exposure. Most importantly, consistency in publishing and personal growth reflect directly on the quality and frequency of the content provided, thereby impacting the blog’s ability to retain and expand its audience. A consistent approach and an open-minded attitude toward learning can turn any initial blogging missteps into critical learning opportunities.

Key Takeaways

– Success in blogging relies on more than just content; it involves technical, networking, and SEO skills.
– Engaging and monetizing a blog effectively requires understanding audience interaction and optimization strategies.
– Consistency in blogging and personal development are essential for long-term growth and reader retention.

Choosing a Niche

When starting a blog, a focused and relevant niche is crucial as it helps attract and retain a targeted audience. Here, at the Yolofied Monkey, it’s clear: we want to improve our finances and let money work for us so we can yolofy different areas in our lives and thus live a richer life. Richer isn’t always more dollars or euros in your account.

When you don’t have clarity or know what niche you’re in, you won’t be able to focus on your content.

Lacking Focus on Content

Amateur bloggers often make the mistake of creating content that strays from their selected niche. This lack of focus can lead to a disjointed blog, confusing potential readers. For example:

Broad topics: They might write about travel, technology, and food all on the same blog, diluting its appeal. This is opposed to a niche site, where we will focus more and thus are niching down.

Consistency: Without consistent content, readers don’t know what to expect, which may lead to lower engagement. Try to find a regular schema that suits you, because that’s the only thing, it’s you or your team that needs to write the articles and get them out there.

The Yolofied Monkey has existed since 2018 but is back on track because I didn’t have the focus and time for this project. Now I post at my tempo and try to be connective to the readers. Improving my finances has always been one of my favorite things in life.

Ignoring Audience Interest

This one might be obvious but you’d be surprised about how much bloggers forget this. If you forget about what your readers need or want, you might lose them. Getting the readers to your blog is one thing, keeping them focused on your content and information is quite something else.

I could write more about some areas I also like: technology and strategy, but that might turn you down a bit.

Ignoring what your audience is interested in can be bad for your blog’s success, you can do some things about it: research your audience and analyze the engagement further:

Audience research: Utilize tools like Google Trends or survey readers to align content with audience interests.

Engagement analysis: Monitor comments and social media to gauge which topics resonate with their readership.

Creating Content

Content is king, just like cash is king in finance.

In the world of amateur blogging, the creation of content is foundational. It requires attention to detail, a clear vision of the intended message, and a commitment to quality.

Neglecting Content Quality

Amateur bloggers often underestimate the importance of high-quality content. They may prioritize quantity over quality, leading to posts that lack depth and clarity. Key mistakes bloggers make include:

Not conducting sufficient research or fact-checking

Using low-resolution images or videos

Failing to maintain a consistent voice or style throughout their blog

Failure to Provide Value

Audiences seek content that adds value to their lives, whether through information, entertainment, or both. Blogs that fail to meet this need often suffer from:

Topics that are not relevant or interesting to their target audience

Content that is too promotional without offering insights or practical advice

Absence of takeaways or actionable steps for the reader

Skipping Proofreading

The final polish of content often goes ignored by amateur bloggers, which can mar their credibility. Common oversights include:

Spelling errors or grammatical mistakes

Awkward phrasing or run-on sentences

Unformatted or disorganized content that challenges reader comprehension

To create engaging and reputable content, amateur bloggers must give equal weight to the quality and value of their work, ensuring it is polished and reader-friendly. Luckily, you can use some tools to help you with this like Grammarly, which has a free version and a paid version.

Design and User Experience

Effective design and user experience are critical for keeping visitors engaged on a blog. If a site is difficult to use or navigate, readers are likely to leave and not return.

Overlooking Mobile Optimization

Many amateur bloggers underestimate the prevalence of mobile device usage. Their blog should be responsive, meaning it adjusts to various screen sizes and resolutions. This includes:

Readable font sizes: Ensuring text is easily legible on smaller screens.

Touch-friendly buttons: Making clickable elements large enough to be tapped with a finger.

The world is transitioning to more mobile users and thus more mobile-friendly blogs and products.

Complicated Navigation

Simplicity should be a guiding principle when designing site navigation. Visitors must find the information they’re looking for without frustration. Key aspects include:

Consistent layout: Utilizing familiar patterns for menu locations and page structures.

Clear labels: Using straightforward and recognizable terms for menu items.

Here on the Yolofied Monkey, I like to keep things simple. Some people might say: too simplistic, but that’s okay as I find it very important that you guys find your way easily on my website.

SEO and Visibility

In the realm of blogging, visibility is paramount, and it largely hinges on mastering Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Novice bloggers often overlook the fundamental strategies of SEO, which can significantly hinder their content’s discoverability.

Ignoring SEO Best Practices

Amateur bloggers frequently neglect basic SEO best practices. These include optimizing title tags, using meta descriptions, and structuring content with proper header tags.

Common Oversights:

Not customizing title tags

Skipping meta descriptions

Poor use of header tags (H1, H2, H3)

Not doing keyword research

Implications:

Lower search rankings

Reduced click-through rates

There’s more to SEO than just the above things, SEO is always changing and tweaking as Google has launched a lot of updates recently and those are the ones that are known. It can be important to diversify your traffic resources. Giving your readers a good reader and user experience on your website gives you good hope that they can turn into recurrent customers.

Underestimating Keywords Research

We’ve already tackled it before, keyword research is important and should be done properly. Think about how you like to think and be treated. There are a lot of keyword tools out there, going from Ahrefs, Semrush… Too many to sum up in this post.

Think of SEO research as a foundation and roadmap for your blog. The roads need to be connected, translating into consistency, topical authority, and cohesiveness. If people look through search engines for a financial post about making extra money for something, chances are high that they will come here and stay.

Keyword Research Essentials:

Relevance: Keywords must align with content.

Search Volume: High search volume indicates popular interest.

Competition: Lower competition can mean easier ranking.

By addressing these common mistakes bloggers make, they can enhance their site’s SEO performance and visibility.

Promotion and Marketing

Also, solid promotion and marketing strategies are key for attracting and retaining readers.

Inadequate Use of Social Media

Amateur bloggers often fail to harness the power of social media effectively. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest serve as platforms to amplify a blog’s reach, yet they require strategic and regular engagement. Here are specific missteps:

Posting irregularly or inconsistently

Failing to tailor content to the unique audience of each platform

Neglecting to engage with followers through comments and messages

Platform

Common Mistake

Facebook

Not leveraging groups

Twitter

Ignoring trending hashtags

Instagram

Poor quality visuals

Pinterest

Not creating vertical pins

Common mistakes bloggers make when using social media

Here, we like to use Pinterest for the time being and we’ll evaluate things from there.

Not Building an Email List

Another one of those extra possibilities when it comes to diversifying your income streams.

An email list is a direct line to readers but is often overlooked by new bloggers. Emails ignite more personal engagement with content.

Consider:

Every subscriber represents a potential recurrent visitor.

Email campaigns can drive traffic back to the blog with updates and exclusive content.

Without an active and growing email list, bloggers risk missing out on a powerful tool for sustaining their readership and driving consistent traffic to their blogs.

We’ve tackled this before, your story should be very attractive to other readers and you should make them feel at home. The Yolofied Monkey likes to do research on SEO, make things simple, and grow things from there.

Engaging with Audience

Amateur bloggers often overlook the importance of interacting with their readers. Fostering a sense of community and dialogue is essential for growth and reader retention.

Who are my fellow yolofied monkeys?

Not Encouraging Comments

Amateur bloggers sometimes fail to realize the value of comments. Comments are a significant metric of engagement and can provide the following benefits:

Feedback: Readers may offer insights or express their needs, which can inform future content.

Community Building: A lively comment section can create a community, encouraging readers to return and engage further.

To encourage comments, bloggers should:

End Posts with Questions: This invites readers to share their thoughts.

Comment Prompts: Use explicit invitations within the article, such as, “Share your experience with this topic below.”

Poor Response Time to Feedback

Responding to feedback is as crucial as receiving it. Bloggers should be attentive to their comment sections and social media messages to maintain reader engagement. The key points include:

Timeliness: Strive to reply promptly, ideally within 48 hours, to keep the conversation relevant.

Acknowledgment: Even if a comprehensive response is not possible immediately, acknowledging the comment can make readers feel heard.

Effective strategies entail:

Scheduling: Allocate specific times for reading and responding to comments.

Notifications: Enable email or mobile notifications to not miss new comments or messages.

Monetization Strategies

When venturing into monetization, bloggers should carefully consider the timing of their strategies and diversify their income sources.

Monetizing Too Early

Amateur bloggers often initiate monetization efforts prematurely. Integrating ads or affiliate links before establishing a substantial audience can deter growth, as readers might perceive the blog as inauthentic or overly commercial. Building a loyal readership should precede monetization.

Monetization isn’t the primary reason for our blog to exist, I like to write about these topics as I’m also eager to learn these things further.

Relying on a Single Income Stream

Dependence on one form of revenue, such as ad revenue, leaves bloggers vulnerable to fluctuations in that market. They should instead pursue multiple streams like:

Sponsored content: Collaborating with brands that resonate with their audience.

Affiliate marketing: Earning commission by promoting products or services.

Selling digital products: Such as e-books or online courses.

Memberships: Offering exclusive content for a fee. This approach provides financial security and resilience for the blog.

There’s more to the income streams above, as I’ve some experience with them on other blogs.

Technical Understanding

In amateur blogging, a solid grasp of technical aspects is crucial. Below are key technical skills that bloggers often overlook.

Not Learning Basic HTML/CSS

You should try to host your website yourself so you can tweak and edit everything as you see fit. Don’t take those websites that look easy enough to use but heavily limit your blogging journey in the process:

Weebly

WordPress.com

Blogging.com

…

Go for your own website, buy the domain name and look for a good hosting plan.

If you don’t know how to code a website or just want convenience, go for wordpress.org or if you know how to code, you can do it yourself also of course.

Not Learning Basic HTML/CSS

Amateur bloggers frequently underappreciate the importance of understanding basic HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). Knowing how to:

Bold text or create italicized phrases using HTML.

Adjust padding and margins to align content with CSS.

helps in customizing blog layouts beyond the defaults provided by blogging platforms.

Ignoring Website Analytics

Another common mistake is not utilizing website analytics programs to track visitor behavior. They often neglect to:

Monitor bounce rates, which indicates if the content is engaging enough.

Evaluate the traffic sources to optimize marketing strategies.

By disregarding analytics, bloggers miss out on valuable insights that could drive their blog’s growth.

It’s just simple: data is the new (s)oil.

Networking and Collaboration

A robust network and strategic collaborations can significantly amplify a blog’s success, but amateur bloggers often overlook these aspects.

Not Engaging with Other Bloggers

Amateur bloggers sometimes fail to realize the importance of building relationships within the blogging community. They don’t typically:

Comment on others’ blogs

Share peers’ content

Participate in blogging forums

Engagement is not just about promoting one’s blog but also about creating genuine connections that can lead to mutual growth.

Avoiding Guest Posting Opportunities

Guest posting is a powerful tool for:

Gaining exposure

Building backlinks

Enhancing reputation

Yet, new bloggers frequently miss out on these opportunities by not reaching out or accepting invitations for guest articles. Collaboration is key for the growth and diversification of content.

Some sites say this doesn’t enhance backlinks, other say they do. Just think of this as an extra opportunity.

Consistency and Productivity

Consistency and productivity are two pillars of successful blogging. They combine to form a robust framework for maintaining a growing and engaged audience. Combine this with content is king and you know the key areas you should tackle first.

Irregular Posting Schedule

An irregular posting schedule can be detrimental to audience growth. Bloggers should:

Identify their optimal posting frequency (e.g., twice a week)

Stick to a consistent publication schedule

Avoiding irregular posting reinforces reader expectations and loyalty.

Inefficient Time Management

Bloggers often struggle with inefficient time management. They should:

Prioritize tasks (writing, editing, marketing)

Allocate specific time blocks for blogging activities

Effective time management leads to consistent content creation and prevents burnout.

Personal Growth and Mindset

In the realm of blogging, personal growth is the bedrock of success, and the right mindset is its cornerstone. Amateur bloggers often falter by neglecting these aspects. The Yolofied Monkey is a platform to grow himself further as a person to improve his life.

Not Setting Clear Goals

Amateur bloggers frequently overlook the importance of setting specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-bound (SMART) goals. Without clear objectives,

They may struggle to track progress.

They risk creating disjointed content that fails to resonate with their audience.

Establishing Milestones:

Specific: Decide on the blog’s niche and content direction.

Measurable: Set subscriber or traffic milestones.

Achievable: Ensure goals are within reach given time and resources.

Realistic: Choose objectives aligned with their skills and available tools.

Time-bound: Set deadlines for each goal to maintain momentum.

I don’t mean you should write down these numbers, but make a plan, just as you’ve made probably a financial plan at some point already. Just try to stick with the big milestones. Think about the positive things to push you further. If you keep thinking: I missed this one, this one, and so on… you will drag yourself down and get in a negative spiral and that’s not what we want.

Fear of Taking Risks

A common pitfall for new bloggers is an aversion to risk-taking, which can stifle creativity and growth.

They might shy away from controversial topics or unique angles.

They might adhere too strictly to established norms and fail to innovate.

Risk Management Strategies:

Weighing Consequences: Analyze the potential outcomes before avoiding or taking a risk.

Incremental Steps: Begin with small risks to build confidence over time.

Learning from Outcomes: Whether a risk pays off or not, valuable lessons can be learned.

Risk-taking isn’t something we say like stealing other people’s ideas or being a fraud. We refer to risk management as things that are out of your comfort zone, and unfamiliar topics at the moment. Not anything else.

It’s important to stay Yolofied right, and fraud or other risky things aren’t part of your way, as there’s also the aspect of legality and ethics.

Legal and Ethical Considerations

Amateur bloggers must navigate carefully through legal and ethical considerations to maintain credibility and avoid costly liabilities.

Disregarding Copyright Laws

Copyright laws protect original work, and bloggers should not copy or reproduce content without permission. They risk severe penalties for using copyrighted images, text, or multimedia without proper licensing or acknowledgment. Bloggers are advised to use royalty-free resources or to create original content.

Not Disclosing Affiliates

Ethical blogging requires transparency with readers about affiliate relationships. Bloggers should disclose if they are receiving compensation for reviews or endorsements. Failure to disclose such information can lead to a loss of trust and may even violate advertising regulations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you want to save or invest but don’t know where to start? Managing your personal finances is key when it comes to achieving financial stability. The 50-30-20 budget provides you with a great framework to start with. This budgeting method allocates the after-tax income into 3 main categories: 50% for needs, 30% for wants, and 20% for savings or debt repayment. If you follow this structure, you can gain easily control over your financial situation, pay the essential expenses, and save some money, while treating and rewarding yourself enough to stick with the budgeting.

The latter is also important and shouldn’t be forgotten! It’s important for your financial stability that you be consistent in your budgeting efforts. By doing this, you’re taking care of yourself and laying the foundation for a stable financial future.

You can always alter the percentages, but stick to the budget.

Key Takeaways

The 50/30/20 rule is a straightforward framework for managing personal finances by dividing income into spending and saving categories.

The method originates from Senator Elizabeth Warren’s book and prioritizes essential expenses, personal wants, and future savings.

Implementing this financial strategy requires consistent monitoring and adjustment to individual financial situations.

Why You Should Have A Budget

A lot of people don’t like to budget or just don’t use it if they don’t need to. Why would so many people be so reluctant to budget? Because it is a way of saying no to yourself and therefore not that fun.

This Yolofied Monkey understands this but you should look beyond the horizon and stick with the budgeting because it will benefit your financial wellbeing.

There isn’t 1 particular budgeting method that’s good for everyone. You might favor this method, but your brother will choose another one, the important thing is that you find one that suits you.

The 50-30-20 Budget Explained

This budgeting method comes from Elizabeth Warren, a Senator, and her daughter Amelia. They published together a book in 2005: “All Your Worth: The Ultimate Money Plan”.

The 50-30-20 budget is a method of managing personal finances that allocates income into three big categories:

Needs or Essential expenses (50%): This represents half of one’s after-tax income. It covers all necessary living costs such as:

Housing (rent or mortgage)

Utilities

Groceries

Transportation

Health insurance

Wants (30%): This section is allocated for non-essential expenditures that enhance lifestyle, including:

Dining out

Entertainment

Subscription services

Personal hobbies

Savings and debt repayment (20%): The remaining fifth of income should be used for:

Emergency fund contributions

Retirement savings

Debt payments beyond the minimum

While using these 3 big categories, you should regularly review your expenses and stick to the planned budget limits. You might make some difficult choices to stick to it. You can always alter a bit of the rules if you want, a bit less to needs and half of that to the wants and savings.

Setting Up the Budget

Setting up a 50-30-20 budget involves organizing your finances into three categories: needs, wants, and savings.

You must calculate your after-tax income and allocate it to the correct category.

Calculating Your After-Tax Income

To initiate the 50-30-20 budget, you should calculate your after-tax income. This is the amount earned minus taxes and is the foundation for allocating your expenses. It’s important to include all sources of income, such as:

Wages

Salaries

Freelance income

Investment returns

If one’s income is irregular, they should use an average of the last few months to get a more stable base for their budget.

Dividing Your Expenses

Once after-tax income is clear, expenses should be divided into three categories:

Needs/Essentials (50% of income): Includes housing, utilities, groceries, transportation, and insurance.

Wants (30% of income): Covers non-essential expenses like dining out, entertainment, and hobbies.

Savings and Debt Repayment (20% of income): Comprises savings, investments, and payments towards debts beyond minimum obligations.

Here is a simple format to allocate the expenses across these categories:

Adjusting the Ratios

It’s perfectly possible that your financial situation now isn’t a perfect fit for this 50-30-20 budget model. You might need to adjust and tweak the ratios a bit to fit your situation:

Higher living costs: More allocated to the needs.

High debt: You’ll want to tackle your highest debts and prioritize debt repayment over wants or even reduce the needs category.

Financial goals: You might prefer to increase savings at the expense of wants for specific things like a down payment on a home.

You must regularly review and adjust these ratios, adapting to changing financial goals and income levels.

Strategies for Success

Implementing the 50-30-20 budget requires discipline and strategic planning. The following strategies ensure adherence to the budgeting framework and help in achieving financial goals. Budgeting is a lot of work and therefore people “forget” about it until they need to do it. There are some simple but effective strategies you can use.

Automating Finances

Each month, you should wire some funds to your savings and/or investment accounts or your debts. By doing this each month on the 5th day, you’re sure that already 20% is saved or invested before you can even spend it.

You can also set up automatic bill payments for paying for your needs or wants.

This one sits down every week for a short review and uses automatic transfers a lot. Always reward yourself first! Nowadays, the interest is higher and can let money work for you. Compound interest can be so great and rewarding!

Savings: Automate a monthly transfer into a savings account.

Investments: Consider recurring deposits into an investment account.

Bills: Set up auto-pay for recurring essentials like rent, utilities, and insurance.

Review and Adjust Regularly

For a budget to remain relevant, it must be reviewed and adjusted periodically, at least every month.

Monthly Check-In: Dedicate time each month to review expenses.

Adjust Appropriately: If an individual consistently overspends in one category, they should reassess their budget to identify areas of improvement.

Maintaining flexibility in the budget allows for changes in financial situations and ensures that the budget continues to meet one’s current needs.

Common Challenges and Solutions

Implementing the 50-30-20 budget can present various challenges, particularly when individuals encounter irregular income streams or significant life changes. The following subsections offer practical solutions to these common issues.

Dealing with Irregular Income

Individuals with fluctuating incomes may find it difficult to apply the 50/30/20 budget consistently. A solution is to calculate an average monthly income based on the past six to twelve months. Monthly expenses can be listed in a table and adjusted according to priority:

Essential Expenses

Wants

Savings

Rent/Mortgage

Dining out

Emergency Fund

Utilities

Entertainment

Retirement Savings

Groceries

Hobbies

Debt Repayment

Transportation

Clothing

Investment

They should then allocate spending percentages based on this average income, allowing some flexibility in the ‘Wants’ and ‘Savings’ categories during leaner months.

Adjusting After Life Changes

Significant life events, like a marriage, divorce, or career change, can necessitate adjustments to the 50/30/20 budget. Your financial priorities will change, and the budget should reflect that. An essential step is to list and re-evaluate monthly expenses and savings goals. If necessary, you’ll have to:

Increase the savings rate to build a buffer.

Reassign certain expenses from ‘Wants’ to ‘Needs’ or vice versa.

Reduce discretionary spending temporarily to accommodate increased essential costs.

Regularly reviewing and adjusting the budget can ensure it remains effective and relevant to one’s current financial situation.

Tools and Resources

To effectively implement the 50/30/20 budget rule, individuals can take advantage of various tools and resources designed for financial planning and budgeting.

Budgeting Apps and Software

Budgeting apps and software offer a range of features that can automate the tracking and categorization of expenses. Some popular options include:

You Need A Budget (YNAB): This app is designed to help users apply budgeting rules and adjust spending habits.

Mint: Provides a comprehensive overview of finances and categorizes transactions to align with the 50/30/20 rule.

PocketGuard: Focuses on preventing overspending by showing how much disposable income is left after accounting for bills, goals, and necessities.

Spreadsheets and Templates

For those who prefer a more hands-on approach, spreadsheets and templates are invaluable resources:

Google Sheets: Offers free budgeting templates that can be customized to fit the 50/30/20 budget framework.

Microsoft Excel: Has a variety of budget templates where individuals can manually enter data and personalize their budgeting methods. I like to use Excel myself.

Personal Capital: While mainly an investment tool, it also provides resources for budget creation and tracking expenses according to the 50/30/20 rule.

Household book: This is also a good classic way, to write everything down, this makes you even more aware of your finances.

What I like about templates and spreadsheets is that they can easily visualize everything so the view is clear and where you should allocate your funds for that period.

Investing with the 50-30-20 Budget Rule

The 50-30-20 rule offers a framework for allocating post-tax income, ensuring that investment remains a priority within financial planning.

Prioritizing Investments

Under the 50-30-20 rule, the 20% allocated for savings and investments is crucial for long-term financial health. Investors should first consider contributing to emergency funds to cover unexpected expenses, which secures their ability to continue investing regularly without interruption. We’ve discussed this earlier here.

Once an emergency fund is established, you can easily focus on investment vehicles that offer satisfactory returns are okay your with personal risk tolerance, and contribute to diversified portfolio growth. Always use the money you don’t need and prioritize. If you have high debts, allocate it to reduce your debts first.

Retirement Accounts

Retirement accounts, such as 401(k)s and IRAs, should be a serious component of the 20% investment slice.

401(k)s: Employees should aim to contribute enough to receive a full employer match, as it represents free money that facilitates the growth of retirement savings. Always max this as free money is good money.

IRAs: Whether Traditional or Roth, IRAs provide tax advantages that benefit the accumulation of retirement funds. Individuals may choose to allocate funds to this after maximizing their employer-sponsored plans.

These tax-advantaged accounts are fundamental for building retirement savings and should be capitalized before considering other investment options. In other countries in the world, there will be similar plans available. Try to max them out and do your research on other investments like maybe stocks, indexes, or other alternatives.

Debt Repayment Strategies

When you have a lot of debts, it can be wiser to tackle them first before thinking about investing the major part of your 20%. There’s no one ideal strategy for everyone. Try to structure your approach so you can prioritize debt repayments can reduce your financial luggage that holds you back. Some strategies are:

Snowball Method: This strategy involves paying off debts from smallest to largest balance, regardless of interest rates. It capitalizes on psychological wins, motivating each smaller debt to be cleared.

List debts from smallest to largest balance.

Make minimum payments on all debts.

Allocate extra funds to the smallest debt until fully paid.

Repeat with the next smallest debt.

Avalanche Method: Prioritizing debts with the highest interest rates can save money over time. This method focuses on reducing the amount of interest paid.

Organize debts from highest to lowest interest rate.

Pay the minimum on all debts.

Direct additional funds to the debt with the highest interest rate.

Once paid off, apply the same strategy to the debt with the next highest rate.

Consolidation: Debt consolidation involves combining multiple debts into a single loan with a lower interest rate, simplifying payments, and potentially reducing the cost of borrowing.

Obtain a new loan with a lower interest rate.

Pay off multiple higher-interest debts.

Focus on repaying the consolidation loan.

Balance Transfer: For credit card debt, transferring balances from a high-interest card to one with a lower rate can be beneficial.

Transfer balances to a card with a lower APR.

Take advantage of introductory rates for greater savings.

Pay down the balance before the promotional period ends.

Borrowers should carefully consider their unique financial situations and choose a strategy that aligns with their objectives and capabilities.

50-30-20 Budget Variations

The 50-30-20 budget rule can be adapted to fit individual financial situations by altering the allocated percentages or integrating alternative budgeting methods.

Customizing the Ratios

Individuals may find the standard 50% (needs), 30% (wants), and 20% (savings) ratio too rigid for their unique circumstances. Modifications are often made:

60/20/20: For those with lower living costs, 60% may be dedicated to savings and investments, reducing the allocation for wants.

70/10/20: In high-cost-of-living areas, 70% might be necessary for needs, leaving less for wants and savings.

These adjustments ensure that the budget remains personalized and practical and not a weird thing.

Alternative Budgeting Methods

Other budgeting frameworks can be used in conjunction with or instead of the 50-30-20 rule:

Zero-based budgeting: Every dollar earned is assigned a specific purpose, ensuring no unallocated money is spent frivolously.

80/20 budgeting (Pareto Principle): Simplifies the process by encouraging saving 20% of income without strictly categorizing the other 80%.

A table illustrating the differences:

Method

Needs

Wants

Savings

Standard 50/30/20

50%

30%

20%

Modified 60/20/20

40%

20%

40%

Modified 70/10/20

70%

10%

20%

Zero-based budget

Varies

Varies

Varies

80/20 (Pareto)

Unspecified

Unspecified

20%

Example of some budgeting methods

These variations ensure flexibility and let you stick to the financial goals and context adapted to your particular situation.

The prospect of leaving your traditional 9 to 5 job can feel scary and overwhelming. This requires a lot of thought, planning and a clear vision of your goals and the risks. The idea of leaving a consistent regular paycheck, the structure of fixed working hours can undermine the financial stability or success in the future.

If you’re feeling limited in developing yourself and looking beyond your current employment, the transition out of a 9 to 5 role presents an opportunity for reinvention and personal growth. This requires a strategic approach, with a serious financial plan, alternatives and managing your well-being. The right knowledge and planning about how to take these steps can lead to a smoother transition and a more fulfilling aka yolofied life.

Key Takeaways

#1 Effective planning and risk assessment are essential for leaving a 9 to 5 job.
#2 Exploring alternatives and preparing financially are critical steps for a smooth transition.
#3 Healthcare, legal responsibilities, and support networks must be addressed before resigning.
#4 You’re not the only one thinking about leaving the 9 to 5 job.

Are You Looking To Quit Your 9 to 5 Job?

If you’re looking to leave your job, know that you’re not alone in this thought process, literally. Your fellow Yolofied Monkeys are with you always, but there are a lot people in the United States quitting their jobs. This is called the Quits Rate.

The Quits Rate is the rate that the workforce voluntarily over the years leaves in search for better alternatives.

This rate has “normalised” to levels before the Pandemic hit (2019), but is still very high mind you.

Why is this so high?

The reason is simple, people struggle, aren’t happy with their current employers for various reasons. Whether you’re looking for independence, more personal time, more happiness, work independently from location and time, higher income and so on… People are tired and getting squeezed. I get also tired and lack a lot of energy from time to time.

The world or the system keeps growing and traditional employers don’t follow up on these trends as easily.

Some people try some things out and leave the golden cage of a regular job, like this yolofied monkey, but others will go further and taste more of it and cut ties with their employer.

Whether you’re tasting the world outside the golden cage or not, this article is for you to prepare on your journey as there are some risks involved and strategic planning and you simply need to be prepared.

The thing is that you’re probably not ready at the moment to leave the job, so make sure you can get extra streams of income, there’s a lot more on that subject here on theyolofiedmonkey.com.

Risks Of Leaving 9 To 5

When you consider leaving a stable 9 to 5 job, it’s highly advised that you assess the potential risks involved. A critical risk is the loss of a steady income. This can lead to financial instability, difficulty in meeting personal and family needs, and challenges in maintaining a standard of living. Simple things like sustaining an emergency fund, will be more difficult in the beginning.

Another significant risk is the loss of benefits such as health insurance, retirement plans, and paid leave. These benefits, often taken for granted, can be costly to obtain independently.

The job market’s unpredictability must also be recognized. Finding a new job or succeeding in a personal business endeavor is never a guarantee, which underscores the importance of having a solid plan in place.

Risk Factor

Potential Consequence

Loss of Steady Income

Inability to cover expenses and savings

Loss of Benefits

High costs for health insurance, retirement

Market Unpredictability

Difficulty in securing new employment

Risks and consequences for leaving the 9 to 5 job

Those leaving a 9 to 5 job may also face professional isolation. Opportunities that come with traditional employment like networking, professional development can be harder to come by.

Furthermore, personal relationships may also be affected, leading to social isolation. Friends and family might not understand or support the decision, which can lead to social pressure and stress.

Lastly, there is a psychological impact, which includes stress and anxiety over uncertainty. Your identity is often tied to your profession and may also undergo a shift, leaving you unsure about yourself.

In considering these risks, individuals should weigh them against the potential benefits and make a decision that aligns with their long-term goals and personal circumstances. Thorough preparation and risk mitigation strategies are crucial to navigating this transition.

How To Prepare For Quitting 9 To 5

Before you leave your 9 to 5 job, careful planning is crucial. Here are the steps you should consider:

Review Finances: Review savings to ensure at least six months of living expenses, as it provides a cushion during the transition period. Having an emergency fund in place to cover monthly expenses, additional costs, housing costs, healthcare, food, debt, utilities and so on…

Create a Budget Plan: Always keep track of your current expenses and project future ones. Planning can keep so much stress away. You can easily review your spending habits and adjust them where needed.

Income Plan: Consider how to generate income after quitting—whether through a new job, freelancing, or a business venture.

New Job: Update resume and LinkedIn profile.

Freelancing: Identify marketable skills.

Business: Draft a business plan.

Research Healthcare Options: Since employer-sponsored health insurance will end, you should explore alternatives but chances are that these will cost a bit more. Plan these and make sure you have them as you can’t foresee some events in your life.

Understand the Resignation Policy: Know the current employer’s process for resignation—note the required notice period and how to handle unused vacation time.

Network: Reach out to connections that could offer employment opportunities or guidance.

Professional Development: Invest time in enhancing skills or obtaining certifications that could be beneficial in the next career move.

By following these steps, you can transition out of a 9 to 5 job with confidence and security.

Exploring Alternative Income Streams

Before you decide on leaving your 9 to 5 job, it’s critical to consider the variety of alternatives available for maintaining a stable income. Here are a few options:

Freelancing: You may capitalize on your skills by offering services on a freelance basis. Popular fields include:

Writing and Editing

Graphic Design

Web Development

Consulting

Teaching Courses

Pros: Flexibility in work hours; choose projects that align with personal interests. Cons: Income can be irregular; lack of employer-provided benefits.

Starting a Business: Entrepreneurship allows for the creation of a unique venture.

Pros: Potential for significant financial reward; complete control over business decisions. Cons: High financial risk; requires substantial time investment.

Remote Work: Many companies now offer full-time positions that can be done remotely.

Pros: Stable income; opportunity to work from any location. Cons: May still require adherence to a fixed schedule.

Part-Time Work: This option provides more free time while still offering an income stream.

Pros: More leisure time; less work-related stress. Cons: Lower income; fewer benefits.

Investing: With an initial financial outlay, you can invest in stocks, real estate, or start-ups.

Pros: Potential for passive income. Cons: Financial risk; requires knowledge of the market.

Choices vary widely and depend on individual circumstances. It is advisable to conduct thorough research and possibly consult with a career advisor or financial planner before making any decisions. The possibilities in getting an extra income stream are almost endless.

Planning Your 9 To 5 Quit Financially

Before you leave your 9 to 5 job, you’ll need solid financial plan to ensure stability. You’ll need to review your current finances by identifying income, expenses, savings, and any debt. On the yolofied monkey, we call it “leaving the golden cage” for a reason as you’ll see that some things that are on the side, might be very expensive, like health care, retirement plans and so on.

Step 1: Evaluate Current Finances:

Keep track of your ins and outs: use a spreadsheet, householdbook and stick to it.

Income: List all sources of regular income.

Expenses: Track monthly expenses categorically.

Step 2: Calculate Savings Requirement

People should aim for a savings cushion that covers at least 6-12 months of living expenses. This savings should be easily accessible and liquid. This is not always the same as an emergency fund but can be related to this. But in this case, as you don’t have a steady income, we should aim for a bigger horizon here and increase the amount. Don’t confuse this with an emergency fund.

Financial Cushion Table

Months

Essential Expenses

Total Savings Needed

6

$2,000/month

$12,000

12

$2,000/month

$34,000

Financial cushion table

Step 3: Reduce Debt

Minimize liabilities to alleviate financial pressure. Prioritize high-interest debt to reduce overall interest paid over time.

Prioritize by interest rate and balance.

Aim to be debt-free before quitting.

Please note that debt-free might not be that easy to gain and can be a longterm goal. Your mortgage is simply a big cost that you can’t cut. You can refinance these and pay the same amount over a longer period, but that’s another topic.

Step 4: Create Alternative Income Streams

Having multiple income streams increases financial security. Individuals could invest in stocks, real estate, or start a side hustle to name a few.

Step 5: Health Insurance and Retirement

Plan for health insurance coverage post-employment.

Understand the impact on retirement savings.

Step 6: Update Your Budget Regularly

Post-employment, you should update your budget so you can reflect the change in income. Frugality may be necessary during the transition. Frugality can give you also fulfillment in this transition, people who don’t know this will confuse this with being cheap and look down on you for no reason.

Proper financial planning is crucial for a successful transition away from traditional employment, and these steps provide a framework for anyone considering such a move.

Your Plan In Time

When you decide to leave your 9 to 5 job, creating a structured timeline is critical for an easy transition. You should consider at least the following steps:

Initial Planning (6-12 months before quitting):

Assess financial reserves

Research potential income streams

Set achievable goals

Mid-term Preparations (3-6 months before quitting):

Fine-tune the business plan or job search strategy

Network actively in the chosen industry

Develop relevant skills or certifications

Final Countdown (1-3 months before quitting):

Notify employer according to contract requirements

Secure health insurance and other necessary benefits

Initiate the alternative income plan

Week of Resignation: – Submit formal resignation letter – Plan a handover of responsibilities – Leave on good terms

You should make sure you’re cushion is big enough so you’re financially stable to support yourself for at least 12 months. This cushion should be higher compared tot the traditional emergency fund as we don’t have a regular job anymore and can’t count on the steady paycheck each month. That’s why you should aim for a bigger cushion.

Financial Considerations Table:

Stage

Action Items

Initial Planning

Save aggressively, reduce debt, budget future expenses

Mid-term

Diversify income sources, secure contracts or clients

Final Countdown

Finalize emergency fund, detailed personal budget projection

It’s essential to adhere to the set timeline; however, you should stay flexible to adapt to personal circumstances or any unplanned opportunities or challenges. These will happen mind you, just use this frame for your convenience.

Remember to keep the communication clear with current employers and colleagues, as maintaining professional relationships can be beneficial for future endeavors. It’s no need to blow up bridges, be constructive as you never know if you need to return (we don’t want this, but this is still a great option).

Healthcare Considerations

When planning to leave a 9 to 5 job, you must consider how they will handle healthcare. Without an employer-backed plan, options include:

Marketplace Insurance: A person can purchase insurance through the government’s Health Insurance Marketplace. This should be done during the open enrollment period, although special enrollment may be available if job loss qualifies as a life event.

Spouse or Family Member’s Plan: If possible, you can join a spouse’s or family member’s health insurance plan.

Healthcare Sharing Ministries: These are not traditional insurance but a cost-sharing arrangement amongst members with similar ethical or religious beliefs.

You should assess your healthcare needs, budget, and the options’ limitations before deciding. You’re also advised to not have a gap in coverage to avoid high medical costs from unexpected health issues. Keeping up with health insurance payments is crucial to remaining covered.

In most cases, you can easily extend the current plan you have with your employer but this will be more costly as you’ll need to pay the full premium yourself (COBRA).

Legal and Contractual Obligations

The terms of your employment contract need to be reviewed. This contract contains specific details about the required notice period and any clauses that could influence the resignation process.

Notice Period:

Typically required: 2 weeks to 3 months

Varies based on: Seniority and position

Non-compete Clauses:

May restrict employment in competing businesses

Can last from a few months to over a year

Non-disclosure Agreements (NDAs):

Protects confidential company information

Employees must continue to honor post-employment

Severance Packages:

Not always guaranteed

Negotiable based on circumstances

Reviewing and understanding these obligations is essential to ensure compliance with legal requirements and to avoid potential disputes with the former employer.

In certain jurisdictions, employees are entitled to receive their final paycheck inclusive of any unused vacation or overtime pay. It is advisable to confirm these details with the Human Resources department of your employer.

Lastly, employees should maintain a professional attitude during the resignation process, ensuring a positive and respectful exit from the company. You never know if you can return when you need it as you can’t foresee everything in your life.

Network and Support System

Also, establishing a solid network is very important. Networking involves building relationships with professionals and peers who can offer guidance, advice, and opportunities. You should attend industry meetups, join professional associations, and participate in online forums in your field of interest. A strong network can provide insight into freelance opportunities, introduce you to potential clients, or even suggest collaboration projects.

A support system is also vital for a smooth transition. This includes family, friends, and mentors who can provide emotional support, financial advice, and encouragement. Engaging with like-minded individuals can also lead to a sense of community and belonging, which can be incredibly motivating during the transition period.

It must be said that some people in your inner circle might think of you as some weirdo, but don’t let them tell you what you need to do, be your own guide. Time will tell.

Maintaining an updated LinkedIn profile can be beneficial.

Finally, they should consider the financial stability a support system can provide:

Support Type

Purpose

Financial Planner

To help create a budget for the transition

Mentors

For guidance and to avoid common pitfalls

Peers

To exchange services and collaborate

Taking the leap from a 9 to 5 to self-employment is less daunting when you have established a strong network and a reliable support system to back your professional journey.

Personal Development

When you’re thinking about leaving your 9 to 5 job, it is crucial to invest in personal development to ensure a successful transition. Personal development encompasses acquiring new skills, enhancing existing abilities, and improving mental and emotional well-being.

Identify Skills: First, identify what skills are necessary for your desired career path. You can use online platforms like LinkedIn to research job requirements.

Skill Acquisition: Subsequently, online courses or workshops can be used to acquire these skills. Websites like Coursera or Udemy offer a plethora of options.

Networking: Building a professional network is another key aspect. You should attend industry-related events or join online forums to connect with like-minded professionals.

Health and Wellness: Improving your health and wellness enhances your mental clarity and emotional stability, critical for navigating career changes.

Mindfulness: You should also incorporate mindfulness practices like meditation or journaling which facilitate clear and strategic thinking.

In summary, personal development is a multifaceted approach involving skill enhancement, networking, and well-being. It equips you with the much needed tools and mindset to easily transition away from a traditional 9 to 5 job.

The way I blog now and maintain several websites, gives me a lot of joy and energy to pursue even further, and that alone is for me so valuable. Eager to get more yolofied! I hope you as well!

Starting an Emergency Fund: Essential For Reaching Financial Security

Financial stability in your life is very important to keep you focused on your goals and yolofying your life! One the best things to do is to build a financial safety net or simply called an emergency fund. An emergency fund serves as this buffer, offering peace of mind and protection against what life throws at you. Whether it’s a job loss, medical bills, broken car or tv, starting an emergency fund and having a dedicated reserve of cash can make the difference between a minor hiccup and a major financial setback.

Starting an emergency fund isn’t just putting money away, it’s also about looking at your real financial situation. Here’s the import thing you need to be honest with yourself in order to decide the right amount to save in the fund. It’s all about finding the right balance, especially if you have a lot of debts and still want this fund. It’s something everyone should prioritize in life, it can make your financial journey a lot easier. This goal is achievable with the right mindset, planning and discipline.

Quick summary:
1 An emergency fund provides you with financial security against unexpected expenses.
2 Starting a fund involves assessing your personal finances and choosing the appropriate saving methods.
3 Building and protecting the fund requires balanced strategies and consistent saving habits.

What Is An Emergency Fund

An emergency fund is a financial safety net designed specifically for the unexpected expenses life throws one’s way. It is a crucial step in avoiding debt when unplanned situations arise.

Purpose of Emergency Funds

Emergency funds serve as a financial buffer that can keep an individual on the right track in a time of need without having to rely on (expensive) credit cards or high-interest loans. Key purposes include covering unforeseen expenses like car repairs, medical bills or job los. This reserve allows one to cover these expenses and reduce your financial stress.

Size of the Fund

The size of an emergency fund can vary based on your personal circumstances. Financial advisors typically recommend saving three to six months’ worth of living expenses. Here’s a basic guideline:

Single-income household: At least six months’ expenses

Dual-income household: Three to six months’ expenses

Couples should consider if both income streams are stable and factor in any dependents when determining the size of their emergency fund.

Others will say you need about 6 months wages, but that’s not something I would recommend.

Types of Financial Emergencies

Financial emergencies can come in various forms, and the fund is designed to cover essential outgoings when they occur. Some common emergencies include:

Medical emergencies: Unanticipated healthcare costs not covered by insurance.

Home repairs: Urgent and necessary repairs such as a broken heater or leaking roof.

Income loss: Sudden unemployment or a significant reduction in income when absent for a longer time.

Vehicle issues: Essential car repairs that are not covered by warranties or insurance.

Having an emergency fund is a fundamental aspect of a solid financial plan, giving you the right resources to handle the surprises life can give you without letting this influence your financial stability.

Assessing Your Financial Situation

Before one should consider starting an emergency fund, it is crucial to understand their financial situation. This requires a detailed examination of expenses, income, and personal financial goals.

Calculating Monthly Expenses

A person should begin by tracking all the monthly expenses. This involves listing housing costs (also mortgage), utilities, groceries, insurance payments, and any other recurring expenses. The following table outlines some common categories of expenses:

Category

Description

Housing

Rent or mortgage payments, property taxes

Utilities

Electricity, water, gas, internet, phone

Food

Groceries, dining out

Transportation

Car payments, fuel, public transit

Insurance & Health

Health insurance, life insurance, medications

Debt Repayment

Credit card payments, loans

Personal & Miscellaneous

Clothing, entertainment, personal care

The key thing here is just to track everything of your finances. All that comes out or in your pockets. There isn’t a best list of categories, the important thing is you can review your situation in an easy way by registering these in a spreadsheet, householdbook and so on.

Analyzing Income Streams

Once expenses are understood, they must examine their income streams. This includes not only their primary job’s salary but also any part-time work, freelancing, dividends from investments, or other sources of income. It’s vital to consider the net income (after taxes and other deductions) to ensure accurate financial planning.

Setting Financial Priorities

Understanding their financial obligations and resources allows an individual to set clear financial priorities. Essential expenses and debt obligations come first of course like housing, food… A priority should also be given to building the emergency fund, aiming for about three to six months of living expenses.

Strategies for Starting Your Fund

Starting an emergency fund is essential for financial security. The following strategies will guide individuals on how to begin this process efficiently.

Budget Adjustments

One can uncover funds for their emergency savings by analyzing their current expenditures. Creating a budget helps to identify non-essential expenses that can be reduced or eliminated. For example:

Cancel unused subscriptions

Limit dining out

Shop with a list to prevent impulse buys

Setting Savings Goals

Establishing clear and achievable savings goals is a critical step. Determine an initial target amount, such as $1,000, and scale up to cover several months of living expenses. Goals should be specified and easily measured by registering them in the tool you’re using.

Automating Savings

Automating transfers to a savings account ensures consistency and eliminates the temptation to spend. One can:

Set up a recurring transfer on the day your salary is paid

Use round-up features on transactions to save the spare change

By implementing these strategies, individuals can steadily build their emergency fund without feeling overwhelmed by the process.

Nowadays, savings account can yield some decent % of interest, be sure to make use of them as this is easy money.

Balancing Emergency Funds with Debt

When managing finances, individuals must weigh the importance of saving for emergencies against the need to pay off debt. The strategy involves understanding the relationship between liquid savings and the potential costs of carrying debt.

Debt Repayment Strategies

Effective debt repayment strategies should include evaluating debt types and their respective interest rates.

One recommended method is the debt avalanche, where one prioritizes debts with the highest interest rates. It reduces the amount paid over time by eliminating the costliest debts first.

Alternatively, the debt snowball method focuses on paying off the smallest debts initially, creating psychological wins that can motivate an individual to continue with their repayment plan.

Strategy

Description

Benefit

Debt Avalanche

Pay extra on the debt with the highest interest rate first.

Saves money on interest over time.

Debt Snowball

Pay off smallest debts first for quick wins to build momentum.

Builds motivation through early successes.

Debt Repayment Strategies

Emergency Fund Versus Debt Priority

An emergency fund serves as a financial safety net, while paying off debt can reduce monthly obligations and save on interest costs. It’s crucial to strike a balance where one saves a minimum emergency fund— typically $1,000 or one month’s expenses—before aggressively paying down debt. You won’t feel yolofied or gain momentum when you don’t have a fund, once you have it, you can gear up to tackle the debts.

Once a baseline emergency fund is established, individuals should evaluate their job stability, health, and potential for unforeseen expenses to determine how aggressively to pay off debt versus building a larger emergency fund.

The world we live in today is very unsure and comes with risks, inflation reduces our spending power, mortgage rates climb but also interest rates on certain saving accounts rise too, this can also be used to diversify and grow your fund as this can reap you rewards possibly your whole life.

Managing High-Interest Debt

High-interest debt, such as credit card balances, can quickly become overwhelming and costly. If the interest rate on any debt is significantly higher than what an emergency fund could earn in a high-yield savings account as said before, it can be better to pay off your debt. Be aware though that if you ignore your emergency fund or don’t have the right discipline to refund it after the expenses, it’s possible that your debts will raise again. Be prepared!

Saving Tips and Tricks

Effective saving strategies are critical for building an emergency fund. They focus on reducing expenditures, adopting frugal habits, and leveraging rewards.

Cutting Unnecessary Expenses

One can categorize expenses and then assess what can be eliminated without impacting their quality of life.

Subscriptions: Review monthly services and cancel those that are not essential.

Utilities: Limit usage of water and electricity to reduce bills.

Eating Out: Minimize restaurant visits to save significant amounts. Cooking at home can be much more fun and relaxing.

Frugal Living Tips

Adopting frugal habits doesn’t require sacrificing everything; it’s about maximizing value.

DIY Projects: Opt for doing it oneself where possible, from home repairs to gifts.

Second-hand Items: Purchase used items when appropriate to save money.

Meal Planning: Plan meals weekly to avoid waste and reduce grocery bills.

Reward Programs and Cash Back

Utilize reward systems from credit cards and stores to earn back a percentage of spending.

Credit Cards: Choose cards with cashback options on purchases.

Loyalty Programs: Join grocery and retail loyalty programs to access special discounts.

Online Portals: Use cashback websites when shopping online to receive a rebate.

Building Momentum

Once an emergency fund is initiated, building momentum is crucial for meeting financial safety objectives.

Tracking Progress

Individuals can stay on course by routinely monitoring their savings. A simple table can serve as an effective progress tracker:

Month

Goal ($)

Deposited ($)

Total ($)

January

500

500

500

February

500

500

1000

Through consistent tracking, one can visually confirm growth and uphold commitment to their savings plan.

Staying Motivated

Staying motivated to get yolofied is key. Try to use the concept of milestones. For instance:

$1000 saved: Treat oneself to a small indulgence, like a favorite meal.

$3000 saved: Enjoy a modest outing, such as a movie night.

Rewards tie positive experiences to financial discipline, reinforcing the saving behavior.

Adjusting Goals Over Time

As circumstances evolve, it’s wise to reassess and adjust financial goals. One might start with a target of three months’ living expenses, but as they achieve this, they could then aim to cover six months. Adaptable goals keep an emergency fund relevant and aligned with changing life situations.

Common Challenges and Solutions

Starting an emergency fund is a prudent financial move, but individuals often face hurdles such as irregular income, unexpected expenses, and savings plateaus. The following subsections provide strategies to navigate these common challenges.

Addressing Irregular Income

For those with fluctuating earnings, consistency in saving is key. They should:

Assess their income: Track income over several months to determine an average monthly earning.

Set realistic goals: Based on the average income, set a modest, achievable savings goal.

Automate savings: Whenever income is received, immediately transfer a predetermined amount to their emergency fund.

Dealing with Unexpected Expenses

Unexpected expenses can disrupt saving efforts. Individuals should:

Review and adjust their budget: Locate areas to cut back on temporarily to fund the emergency without hindering their saving progress.

Create a mini emergency fund: Even a small fund dedicated to minor unforeseen costs prevents tapping into the main emergency fund.

Overcoming Savings Plateaus

Savings plateaus occur when progress seems to stall. To advance beyond this, individuals can:

Increase income: Consider part-time work or freelance projects to boost overall income.

Re-evaluate spending: Regularly inspect expenses and adjust the budget to find extra funds to allocate to the emergency fund.

Enhancing Your Fund

To fortify an emergency fund, you should consider strategies that not only grow the fund but also adapt it to their changing life circumstances and regularly reassess its adequacy and asset allocation.

Investing for Growth

Investing a portion of an emergency fund in low-risk securities can be beneficial. One approach is using high-yield savings accounts or money market funds. They often offer higher interest rates compared to regular savings accounts. Another conservative investment option is short-term Treasury bills; they are backed by the government, reducing the risk while providing growth potential.

Adjusting for Life Changes

Life events like a career change, marriage, or the birth of a child warrant a review of one’s emergency fund. A single individual might suffice with 3-6 months of expenses saved, but a growing family might consider increasing this to 6-12 months.

Life Event

Recommended Action

Career Change

Reevaluate monthly expenses

Marriage

Merge and adjust funds accordingly

New Child

Increase fund to cover added costs

Periodic Review and Rebalancing

An emergency fund should be evaluated at least once per year to ensure it aligns with current financial situations and goals. During the review, the individual should check the performance of any invested funds and rebalance if necessary to maintain the desired risk level and liquidity. This includes scaling contributions up or down or shifting funds into more appropriate investment vehicles as circumstances evolve.

Family and Emergency Funds

Starting an emergency fund is a crucial step in securing a family’s financial stability. This section addresses how to approach emergency savings while considering family dynamics and responsibilities.

Teaching Kids about Savings

Instilling the value of savings in children lays the foundation for their financial literacy. Parents can use clear jars to visually demonstrate saving for emergencies, contrasting with other jars for different goals. Age-appropriate tasks with monetary rewards can also reinforce the concept of emergency funds.

Planning for Spouse/Partner

Communication is vital when handling emergency funds with a spouse or partner. Families should decide together:

Amount to Save: Agree on a minimum savings goal that could cover 3-6 months of living expenses.

Contribution Strategy: Determine a fixed percentage of each individual’s income to contribute.

Utilizing separate accounts designated for emergencies can help in tracking progress and preventing non-essential withdrawals.

Supporting Aging Parents

Adult children may need to consider their aging parents when creating an emergency fund. This involves:

Estimating Costs: List potential expenses such as healthcare, caretaking, and housing.

Setting Boundaries: It’s important to establish financial limits to ensure their support does not jeopardize one’s own financial security.

Creating a joint account for these expenses can streamline contributions and expenses tracking.

Long-Term Considerations

When starting an emergency fund, it’s important to consider how it fits into a broader financial strategy over the long haul, integrating retirement planning, estate considerations, and wealth preservation.

Retirement and Emergency Funds

Establishing Priorities: One must balance the need to save for retirement with the immediacy of an emergency fund. Contribute to a traditional 401(k) or an IRA to ensure long-term growth, while simultaneously building an emergency fund covering 3-6 months of expenses. There might be other financial plans available also, make use of them.

Investment Strategy: Adjust the asset allocation within retirement accounts to be less risky as one approaches retirement age. This protects the retirement funds, keeping them accessible for emergencies without significant losses due to market volatility.

Next Steps After Achieving Your Fund Goal

Once an emergency fund goal is reached, it’s important to maintain momentum in financial planning. This involves setting new targets, considering more sophisticated investment options, and planning for long-term financial health.

Expanding Financial Objectives

After starting an emergency fund, individuals should assess their wider financial landscape. They could consider:

Savings goals: Setting aside funds for short-term objectives like vacations or a down payment for a home.

Retirement accounts: Increasing contributions to IRAs or employer-sponsored 401(k) plans.

Exploring Advanced Investment Strategies

With a safety net in place, exploring higher-yield investment opportunities can be prudent. This might include:

Stock market: Diversifying portfolios with a mix of stocks and bonds.

Real estate: Investing in property as a means to generate passive income.

Financial Planning for the Future

Long-term financial security requires continual assessment and adaptation. Individuals are encouraged to:

Address debt management, perhaps by refinancing loans or targeting high-interest debts.

Create an estate plan, including wills and trusts, to protect assets and ensure proper distribution.

Frequently Asked Questions

This section addresses some common inquiries individuals have about starting and managing an emergency fund.

How much should an individual aim to save when initially building an emergency fund?

The initial target for an emergency fund should be to save enough to cover at least three to six months of living expenses. These funds should act as a financial buffer for unforeseen circumstances such as job loss or medical emergencies.

What are considered smart strategies for someone starting an emergency fund from scratch?

One should start by setting clear, achievable goals and automating savings to regularly contribute a portion of their income. Cutting unnecessary expenses and prioritizing saving can help grow an emergency fund more quickly.

Can an emergency fund be too large, and how does one determine the appropriate size for their needs?

An emergency fund can become too large if it significantly exceeds one’s living costs for an extended period (e.g., greater than 12 months of expenses). The appropriate size varies depending on one’s job stability, monthly expenses, and personal risk tolerance.

What are the key differences between an emergency fund and regular savings, and why are both necessary?

An emergency fund is specifically for unexpected expenses, providing immediate liquidity without the risk of withdrawal penalties, while regular savings may be earmarked for future planned purchases or investments. Both are crucial to ensure financial stability and to plan for long-term financial goals.

In what types of accounts should one store their emergency fund to maximize accessibility and maintain value?

Emergency funds should be stored in liquid accounts such as a high-yield savings account, money market account, or a short-term certificate of deposit (CD). These accounts provide balance between earning interest and being easily accessible.

How can someone with a limited income create a robust emergency fund over time?

Individuals with limited income can start by saving small, consistent amounts and gradually increasing them over time. One should also review and adjust their budget to find additional saving opportunities and consider supplemental income sources.

How can you build an emergency fund if you don’t have one? Some known ways to reach this first (of many?) targets.

We all
know that having a cushion is very important, it relieves stress and you don’t
have to review your finances that often. In the personal finance literature,
they advise you should cover 3 – 6 months of expenses. You can start from 1
month and go from there. It’s difficult if you’re living paycheck to paycheck
and can barely keep up.

That’s why you should start with your first € 1.000. Knowing it’s doable doesn’t mean you’ll know how to get there. There are a few things you can do to achieve this goal. It’s all about consistency and habits. You’ll crush your target easily.

Saving automatically

Setting
up automated transfers has the advantage that you don’t have to think about
saving itself: should I save or should I buy that luxury thing? A few ways:

Saving a low amount per week into your savings account.

Thinking it’s a low amount so it won’t change much is wrong! Getting
started can make you feel more in control of your financial life.

52-week challenge or 12-months challenge

You can play it like a game: 1 € in the first week and double it
each week (saves you € 1.378) or € 0,5 first month and double it each month
(saves you € 2.047,50 a year)

Using an app

There are a lot of apps you can use to help you save money. Simply registering your expenses can make you feel responsible for it. I don’t use these, but they exist (personal capital is often used by our American friends for example). I’d rather use a simple excel spreadsheet to do so. Registering my recurring expenses helps you think more about them, think about buying that coffee each day when going by train to your work. € 2 x 20 days x 12 months adds up to € 480! How insane is that? I don’t say you shouldn’t buy this coffee, if it’s important to you you can do just that. To me constantly buying that coffee is insane, you can drink coffee on the job and at home very cheaply but that’s just me…

Payday: pay yourself first!

When it’s payday and you receive your salary, you can automate your savings from your checking to your savings account. Doing this won’t make you reconsider it and after a while you won’t miss it.

Separate and secure place for savings

One
should save his money into an account that’s not attached to your checking
account. If it’s attached you can access it easily and transfer money to your
checking account and you’ll be tempted to spend it on things that are not
needed or non-emergent.

Get rid of useless stuff!

Nowadays, minimalist or clutter-free living is trendy! Living your life free of excess stuff can also be a big boost to your savings if you live simply. Just keep the things that add value in your life and get rid of anything that doesn’t and/or just fills up space. By doing this, you can pursue things you want to do, even finding income-producing activities.

Furniture and other objects

Go
through your home and look for the things that can give you a full refund. Less
clutter and a bigger savings account!

Then sell the things you don’t want anymore or don’t have any use for. Selling on Ebay, facebook markets, Craigslist, do garage sales… will give you easy money for these items.

Monthly subscriptions

You can also review your subscriptions and services you don’t use or want anymore. When you are not sure about it, use it for another month and otherwise cash the money you’d spend otherwise. This can be Netflix, magazine, HBO-account, your mobile data etc… Cancelling that Netflix-account or some other streaming service can get you more quality time with your loved ones and even “get paid” for it. You can share a Netflix-account with a lot of people so it won’t cost that much.

Starting a side hustle

Trying to
start a side hustle is often one of the fastest ways to reach your savings
targets because this adds up to your usual paycheck.

You don’t
must be an entrepreneur to do this but it helps! You can use things you already
have: renting out vacant rooms in your house, renting that car out on a
car-sharing site. Using your free time to go babysitting, pet walking, working
in a restaurant or bar, be a referee in sports games…

Asking
your friend or family can help you on your mission, people need stuff done all
the time and you’ll be surprised what they will pay for it.

Go on a spending diet!

You can
choose, for a specific period, not to spend money on unnecessary things. You
can:

Clip coupons (groceries, 1+1 on products…)

Buy in large quantities and freeze your excess food

Don’t use the car and go to work by bike or on foot or commute and reduce fuel costs

Renegotiate your bills (such as energy, water…)

These are
just a few examples you could implement to reach that first € 1.000 goal.

Just get started!

People
sometimes overthink what’s the best thing to do, sometimes taking action is the
best option. Only those who try will become in life! You’ll get started and
might reach your goal sooner then you think and feel fantastic upon reaching
your destination!

What have
you done to reach that first milestone?

Last week I’ve had a conversation with one of my friends in the cycling team (friends, not professional) about saving money each month and I was shocked.

He’s a father to a son and lives with his girlfriend in her house so he doesn’t has to pay mortgage on the house. He wears clothing of (expensive popular) brands and has a jeep-like car (Volkswagen) on a loan. He stated that he saves about 400 euro’s mostly in a month. Knowing that the median wage in Belgium is around 2.100 net (see about page), it’s possible his wage is a bit lower but even if so…

When I’ve heard him talking about it, I was silent for a few seconds, he asked why. I’ve responded that what would happen if he would buy a house and pay off a mortgage? He answered he wouldn’t do some things anymore and he states he doesn’t want to live as some sort of monk and just do as he wants to do.

I must say I feel like a stranger after that conversation. My situation is a lot different from his, but I know that I wouldn’t be happy with saving that amount each month. I’m a guy who loves being a bit different…

I don’t have to spend a lot of money to know that I’m alive. The best things in life are free, having a girlfriend of boyfriend, family, doing things together, even going to work and knowing you have a safe “cushion” is key to that happiness for me and yolofying your life.
